It must have been 9:05 p.m., a Friday evening. I had just left my graphic design workstation to move to my second computer, mainly used for word processing, when I felt a numbness in my right leg. At first, I didn’t pay much attention to it. […] It was when I reached my second computer and tried to grab the mouse that I realized all was not well. […] I was having a stroke.
The following week, I was offered a stay in Mont-Joli to follow an intensive program. As soon as I arrived at 2 North, I was asked what my expectations were. I answered: to drive my car and to be able to use my computers.
I spent my weeks in Mont-Joli, but I came home on weekends. At home, my main occupational therapy exercise was washing the dishes. […] Picking up, with your right hand, the handle of a fork 4 mm wide and 2 mm thick — now that’s a sport.
Don’t limit yourself to what you think you can do. Therapists do 50% of the work. The rest happens between your two ears. Set yourself goals and don’t hesitate to try to exceed them.
Remember? When I arrived at 2 North, I had stated my two goals. On my last day in Mont-Joli, I left on my own, behind the wheel of my car. And as for the computer, I finished my volume V and I am now on volume VI.
